Low-profile mattresses are lower in height and supposedly offer the same support as a normal-height mattress. We're skeptical about this claim because a shorter mattress has fewer layers. Fewer layers mean you either sacrifice height in your (a) support layer or (b) comfort layer.

A much better alternative is choosing a lower-profile box spring and getting a normal-height mattress. Our favorite "low profile" mattress that truly doesn't sacrifice longevity is the Saatva Classic. They offer an 11.5" low-profile mattress.

Do I Need A Low Profile Mattress?

Absolutely not. The better option is to pick a low-profile box spring (2-4 inches) and pair it with a normal-height mattress. You can even skip the box spring and go with a 2" metal bunkie board (you can find them on Amazon).

If you're absolutely determined to find a low-profile mattress, consider the Saatva Classic. An incredibly luxurious innerspring hybrid. Feels like sleeping on a legitimate 5-star hotel bed.

Is Quality Impacted By A Low Profile Mattress?

Yes. Quality can be impacted by a shorter mattress. A shorter height has fewer (or thinner) layers. Thinner layers mean your weight is distributed amongst shorter layers of foam, which can potentially impact comfort and longevity.

Is A Low Profile Mattress Less Firm?

Not really. If anything, a low-profile mattress is likely to be a little softer because there's a shorter comfort layer (on top) vs. a higher-profile mattress.

No point in risking the chance of you experiencing an unnecessarily soft mattress (due to height) when you can simply pick a normal-sized mattress and combine it with shorter support.

Are Low Profile Mattresses Cheaper?

Sometimes, especially with memory foam or latex. Memory foam and latex price is directly proportional to the quality and height of foams. A thicker foam mattress is pricier.

You typically do not see a less expensive innerspring hybrid just because it's shorter. Same coils, same comfort system, just slightly shorter for convenience.

Do You Need Special Support For A Low Profile Mattress?

You still need the same sturdy support whether the mattress is low-profile or not. Your and your potential partner's weight doesn't change if your mattress is slightly shorter. Therefore, sturdy support, like a metal bunkie board or a well-crafted wooden box spring, is your best bet.
