Fiberglass is a cheap and effective fire barrier for memory foam mattresses.

The best memory foam mattresses don't contain fiberglass.

Fire retardant fibreglass is used above memory foam, but under the cover. Replace your mattress instead of removing the cover.

The flammability standards in California have changed to allow manufacturers to use polyurethane foam without harmful additives, but some alternatives, such as fiberglass, may be hazardous.

CDC research in 2020 found that a 6-year-old with persistent skin irritation and respiratory irritation was exposed to fiberglass through a mattress.

Wool or polylactic acid batting is recommended for fireproofing.

If your mattress contains fiberglass, you should get rid of it. Choose a high-quality brand like Saatva Classic. Exceptionally durable and comfortable. No fiberglass or other dangerous materials.

#1 memory foam mattress with no fiberglass?

The Saatva Classic is the leading mattress in the US (according to our extensive analysis).

Comfortable and extremely durable.

The best part? There is no fiberglass!

In the meantime, follow these 4 steps while you wait for your new mattress:

1. Don't remove the cover.
2. Vacuum your mattress and any surrounding furniture thoroughly.
3. Get a good quality mattress protector to prevent holes.
4. Dispose of it as soon immediately when you get the new Saatva Classic mattress.

How can I tell if my memory foam mattress has fiberglass?

Follow these 4 tips to avoid a fiberglass mattress:

• Check the law tag: If the law tag says 'fiberglass', 'fiber glass', or 'glass' anywhere, your mattress has fiberglass in it as a fire retardant.
• Read labels carefully: "Made in China" labels can indicate that a mattress contains fiberglass. There are mattresses made in China that do not contain fiberglass at all, but international mattresses are more likely to have it.
• Examine the mattress: Glass fibers are small and difficult to see. Fiberglass is commonly used as an inner cover for mattresses, appearing as a woven material with tiny fragments of glass embedded in it. Light your mattress with a flashlight. You should replace your old mattress if it is covered with shiny, glittery material.
• Consider the mattress' smell: Mattress' glass fibers can be detected by their smell. Many have a distinct smell due to formaldehyde and glue released into the air.

Note: Keep the mattress cover on. Fiberglass is especially common on memory foam mattresses. If you have to remove your cover (fiberglass particles), wear a mask, be gentle and use a vacuum on your cover once the cover is back on.

Why is fiberglass used in memory foam mattresses?

Fiberglass fire barriers cost less and are non-toxic.

If fiberglass gets into the wrong places, it can be really annoying (and potentially hazardous to your health).

Why is Fiberglass so dangerous?

Glass fibers are extremely fine and pointy, and can irritate the skin.

Your bedding, clothes, and floor may contain them if they escape your mattress.
