Sinking mattresses pose a genuine and serious (even worse, sometimes urgent) health risk. Sleep deprivation and back and neck misalignment lead to complicated and numerous health issues.

When a mattress sinks in the middle, it both (a) sinks in the middle when you lie on it and (b) doesn't return to its original shape (when you stop lying on it).

You can return or exchange it (if you just bought it). Your mattress may also be covered by a warranty (call your mattress brand).

Buying a new mattress, like Saatva, is likely your best option if your mattress sinks in the middle.

Buy A New Mattress To Fix Your Sinking Mattress In The Middle

If your mattress is sinking in the middle, it's best to get a sturdy and built-to-last mattress (like Saatva).

Sinking mattresses rarely recover their shape completely; even if you fix it - the damage is permanent.

Replace Your Foundation / Boxspring To Fix A Mattress Middle Dip

Replace your foundation even if it appears sturdy (do this by running your hand along the top to check for soft spots; which indicate damage and support weakness).

Important note - make sure to use a box spring at least 6" high (otherwise it won't provide the support you need).

6" too high? Use a piece of plywood or bunky board (listed below).

Use Plywood/Bunkie Board/Slats To Fix Your Sagging Mattress In The Middle

If your mattress is sagging in the middle you can use a mattress helper. It gives you proper alignment and comfort from below the mattress.

• Plywood: A 2-inch thick piece of plywood is by far the best foundation. You can buy it from a Home Depot or Hardware store. It prevents too many failure points (causing more sag).

• Bunkie board: A metal Bunkie board is also an excellent option. Amazon sells them for a reasonable price (they range between 1.5" and 3").

• Slats: Slats are a good solution, but you should place them at least 3-inches apart to ensure durability. Replace warped slats inside the frame below the box springs and add 1 - 2 extra slats for additional support.

Note: The foundation of your bed can contribute to premature mattress sagging. Foundations with fewer than six legs and slatted foundations can also cause premature sagging.

The type of foundation for your mattress depends on several factors, including the manufacturer's specifications.

Additionally, a metallic frame for your bed can help you enjoy your mattress for more years as it provides better support. Wooden bed frames tend to deteriorate quicker with the passing of time.

Topper? Likely Not A Solution For Your Mattress Sagging In The Middle

Toppers are almost never the best solution for mattresses sinking in the middle.

Why? Because toppers collapse in the middle with no support below.

Avoid toppers completely if you're trying to fix your sinking mattress in the middle.

This will only result in extra time and money spent, and the sagging will remain.

You're much better off buying a new mattress.
