The short answer - it's complicated. Reports online (from real user reviews) indicate at least some of their mattresses might. In fact, one user from Reddit claims they purchased a Lucid mattress and experienced severe fiberglass contamination in their home.

This single user report (although there are multiple reports somewhat similar to this over the past 2 years), does not necessarily confirm Lucid has fiberglass in their mattresses, it just means you'll need to do your due diligence.

We strongly recommend calling their sales line to confirm their mattresses do not have fiberglass. Get both (1) verbal and (2) written (via a follow-up email) acknowledgement that they do not use fiberglass in any part of their collections. As a general rule of thumb, we recommend considering steering clear of brands that have had fiberglass controversy either (1) in the past or (2) on-going. This is why we picked Saatva as our #1 best mattress of 2022. They have no fiberglass in their mattresses and take extra precautions to ensure they're mattresses are sustainably built to last.

Why Is Fiberglass In Lucid Mattresses Potentially Dangerous?

The US requires flame retardants in every mattress sold Lucid included. Fiberglass is (1) cheap and (2) often used in budget mattresses (they can be used in expensive, 'luxury' mattresses also). There’s no direct evidence linking fiberglass in mattresses to health hazards. But that doesn't mean small shards of glass in your lungs don't lead to health complications over time. They may.

Moreover, fiberglass could become exposed in 2 primary ways. (1) washing your cover and (2) heavy movement. In either case, microscopic shards of fiberglass become free and exposed in open air. If fiberglass circulates in the air around your home, you might breath it in. Avoid this at all costs.

Known dangers of fiberglass include:

  • Skin and eye irritation
  • Damage to lungs if inhaled (which leads to breathing/respiratory problems
  • Digestive problems if ingested

There's inconclusive evidence that fiberglass can cause cancer. It's suspected as a potential carcinogenic.

What To Do If You Already Have A Lucid Mattress?

If you already have a Lucid mattress (and worry about the potential health hazards from fiberglass exposure), consider these steps:

  1. Return (Within Trial Period): If you've within Lucid mattress's trial period, consider returning it.
  2. Return (Outside Trial Period): If you're outside their trial period, call them and see if they'll extend a rare return refund. Specifically mention your severe concerns about fiberglass. Request to speak with a manager if they give resistance on the phone.
  3. Email Them: If Lucid refuses to take your mattress back for a full refund, you can write them a stern (but reasonable) email about your concerns. Set email header to: 'ATTENTION: CEO'. Consider potentially mentioning legal action (if they're really being unreasonable) in a subsequent response if they (a) refuse or (b) ignore.
  4. Dispose: If options 1-3 don't work, we recommend calling a local company that specializes in mattress disposals. Consider removing your mattress immediately from your home in preparation for a new mattress (without fiberglass).
  5. Buy A New Mattress: Buy a new mattress. Saatva is our #1 Best Mattress of 2022 for a reason. They have: (1) no fiberglass, (2) extremely comfortable, and (3) built to last 10-15 years (with amazing customer support).

What Is The #1 Fiberglass-Free Mattress?

We subjectively consider Saatva the #1 Best Mattress of 2022, which includes 'fiberglass free' or 'without fiberglass'.

The reason? 5 to be exact:

  1. They're an established brand (and one of the oldest ecommerce mattress brands; they launched in 2009).
  2. Their mattresses are built to last.
  3. They have a mattress for every sleep style and position (i.e. (1) Saatva Innerspring, (2) Loom & Leaf Premium Memory Foam & (3) Zenhaven Organic Talalay Latex).
  4. They have extremely friendly policies. 120-day sleep trial. 15-year warranty. Fantastic customer service (you get a human in the US when you call them).
  5. They're a legitimately great price to performance/quality ratio (don't take our word for it - read their 50k+ 5-star real reviews online).
