Ikea does NOT have fiberglass in their mattresses (underneath their cover).

Make sure you're aware of brands that either: (1) hesitate to directly answer if you ask whether they have fiberglass in their mattress or (2) say they use a 'proprietary blend' in their fire retardant.

Fun fact: if you have a medical condition or can receive a prescription from your doctor - you can order a mattress without a fire retardant.

Why Is Fiberglass in Ikea Mattresses Potentially Dangerous?

The US requires flame retardants in every mattress sold Ikea included. Fiberglass is (1) cheap and (2) often used in budget mattresses (they can be used in expensive, 'luxury' mattresses also). There’s no direct evidence linking fiberglass in mattresses to health hazards. But that doesn't mean small shards of glass in your lungs don't lead to health complications over time. They may.

Moreover, fiberglass could become exposed in 2 primary ways. (1) washing your cover and (2) heavy movement. In either case, microscopic shards of fiberglass become free and exposed in open air. If fiberglass circulates in the air around your home, you might breath it in. Avoid this at all costs.

Known dangers of fiberglass include:

  • Skin and eye irritation
  • Damage to lungs if inhaled (which leads to breathing/respiratory problems
  • Digestive problems if ingested

There's inconclusive evidence that fiberglass can cause cancer. It's suspected as a potential carcinogenic.

Should I Keep My Mattress If It Doesn't Have Fiberglass?

If your mattress doesn't have fiberglass, there's nothing wrong with keeping it. If it works - no need to fix it.

We still strongly recommend doing your due diligence to triple check any mattress you either: (1) have or (2) are considering that it does not have fiberglass in it.

This is why Saatva is our #1 best mattress of 2021. Saatva does not (1) have fiberglass, uses (2) high-quality and organic materials, and (3) is built-to-last 10-15+ years.

What Is The #1 Fiberglass-Free Mattress?

We subjectively consider Saatva the #1 Best Mattress of 2022, which includes 'fiberglass free' or 'without fiberglass'.

The reason? 5 to be exact:

  1. They're an established brand (and one of the oldest ecommerce mattress brands; they launched in 2009).
  2. Their mattresses are built to last.
  3. They have a mattress for every sleep style and position (i.e. (1) Saatva Innerspring, (2) Loom & Leaf Premium Memory Foam & (3) Zenhaven Organic Talalay Latex).
  4. They have extremely friendly policies. 120-day sleep trial. 15-year warranty. Fantastic customer service (you get a human in the US when you call them).
  5. They're a legitimately great price to performance/quality ratio (don't take our word for it - read their 50k+ 5-star real reviews online).
