The short answer? No.

High-quality brands (like the #1 mattress available right now, the Saatva Classic) don't use fiberglass.

Federal law requires all mattresses to have a fire barrier or fire retardant.

Many brands decide to use fiberglass in their mattresses because it is a cheap flame retardant.

This material is also known for being very malleable while also being durable, so it is easy for manufacturers to work with.

Fiberglass and other potentially harmful materials are more likely to be found in low-priced mattresses ($600 or below for a queen).

High-quality brands (like Saatva Classic) don't use fiberglass.

#1 Alternative If My Mattress Has Fiberglass?

If your mattress contains fiberglass, replace it immediately.

Exposure to fiberglass can result in serious health problems.

The Saatva Classic is the #1 mattress available in the US based on our assessment and overall positive reviews. Incredibly comfortable and built to last. No fiberglass!

While you wait for your new mattress, make sure to follow these steps:
1. Keep the cover on.
2. Completely vacuum your mattress and any surrounding furniture
3. Use a mattress protector - cover your mattress with a good quality protector as insurance against holes (and to extend the life of your mattress)
4. Dispose of it as soon as you get the new Saatva Classic mattress

How Do I Know If My Mattress Has Fiberglass?

Important tips to avoid a mattress that contains fiberglass:

• Read the law tag: If the law tag says "fiberglass", "fiber glass", or "glass" anywhere, your mattress has fiberglass in it as a fire retardant.
• Pay attention to labels: Labels that say "made in China" can be good indicators of a mattress containing fiberglass. Fiberglass is not used in all mattresses made in China, but international-made mattresses are more likely to have it than American-made mattresses.
• Investigate the mattress: It is difficult to see glass fibers due to their small size. The fiberglass is typically woven into the inner cover of mattresses, presenting as a woven material with tiny glass shards embedded in it. Turn off the lights and shine a flashlight over your mattress. If your old mattress is covered with shiny, glittery material, you should replace it.
• Pay attention to the smell of the mattress: You can recognize glass fibers in a mattress by their smell. Due to the formaldehyde and glue released into the air, many have a distinct odor.

Note: Under no circumstances should you remove the cover from your mattress. Fiberglass is especially prevalent in memory foam mattresses. Make sure to wear a mask if you have to remove your cover (this is where the fiberglass particles are).

Why Fiberglass Is Dangerous

Fiberglass fibers are extremely fine but pointy, causing some people itching and irritations. When fiberglass particles attach to your lungs, they can cause serious respiratory problems.

Direct exposure to fiberglass can be harmful.

Symptoms include itching, coughing, stomach pain, a sore throat or nose, and red eyes.

The tiny fibers in the mattress cover can get all over everything if the cover gets worn out or defective, and once they get out, they can be impossible to remove without professional assistance.

When fiberglass escapes from a mattress, it is very difficult to clean up - fine particles can end up in your bedding, clothes, and flooring. Getting rid of them could be expensive.

What To Do If My Mattress Has Fiberglass

Prevention is key. Simply buy a mattress that doesn't contain any harmful substances like fiberglass. Saatva Classic is our favorite mattress for this reason.

The chances of sleeping on fiberglass are high if you purchased your mattress online from a popular online retailer for less than $600.

You can confirm this by checking the label right now and using the other tips in this guide.
