Yes, your mattress can get burned.
But it's quite rare, and you have a flame retardant underneath the cover (that substantially slows any significant burning).
Your cover can still be damaged by flames.
Do not try to burn your mattress in an attempt to dispose/get rid of it.
The purpose of flame retardants is to slow down a burning process, not to prevent it altogether.
To get rid of your mattress - donate or dispose of it. Don't try to destroy it yourself.
When shopping for a new mattress look for natural flame retardants like wool and avoid harsh chemicals!
Note: A great flame retardant and incredible overall comfort and durability make the Saatva Classic our favorite mattress pick.
How Do You Destroy A Mattress?
There is no "how to destroy your mattress" because you cannot do this yourself.
It is hazardous and can cause serious environmental harm.
Donate or dispose of it. Don't try to destroy it yourself.
Your mattress will probably end up in a recycling facility where the foam and soft materials from your mattress will be removed and recycled along with the wooden structures.
Is It Safe To Burn A Mattress?
If you need to dispose of your old mattress, avoid burning it and instead take it to a recycling facility.
Consider these 3 important tips regarding safety with burning your mattress:
• You cannot burn your old mattress on a bonfire because it is illegal and causes pollution. Inhaling these toxic fumes might cause severe medical issues like breathing difficulty.
• Burning a mattress releases toxic fumes into the air, which then make their way into the water supply and food we eat.
• Memory foam mattresses contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are highly toxic to the environment and health. You should never burn a memory foam mattress.
