Bed bugs can survive up to five days without a meal of blood. The amount of time they last depends on their age--older nymphs are able to go longer than newly hatched ones, as they have stored energy reserves. They enter into a semi-hibernation state and use their exoskeleton for extra protection from the elements. When hungry, bed bugs seek out human or animal blood using specialized mouthparts called "stylets."

They feed for around five minutes before returning to hiding and digesting. Large adults may even be able to survive several months between meals if temperatures don't get too hot or cold since these conditions will reduce prey availability. In extreme environmental conditions like freezing temperatures, bed bugs become dormant until more hospitable conditions arise, then return seeking sustenance again. Heat exposure is deadly for them; even those best adapted won't live beyond two weeks at most. If you suspect an infestation, act quickly by replacing your mattress and treating other areas with insecticides!
